The 2nd leg of Chelsea and Arsenal's 1998 League Cup semi-final took place at Stamford Bridge on 18 February 1998. It was Gianluca Vialli's first match as manager, Ruud Gullit having been dismissed just days earlier. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Mark Hughes' strike in the opening ten minutes levelled the scores on aggregate. Patrick Vieira was sent off just after half-time for a foul on Graeme Le Saux and Chelsea took command with two goals in two minutes: Roberto Di Matteo scored with a spectacular effort from 30 yards and then Dan Petrescu latched onto a Gianfranco Zola corner to effectively seal the tie. A late Dennis Bergkamp penalty put Arsenal back in contention, but the Blues held on to clinch a final place against Middlesbrough.
