The 2013 UEFA Super Cup was contested between 2012-13 UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich and 2012-13 UEFA Europa League winners Chelsea. It was Chelsea's third appearance in a Super Cup match, having won the trophy in 1998 and lost to Atlético Madrid the previous season. The game was a re-match of the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, in which Chelsea won 4-3 on penalties. This time the German side would win via a penalty shoot-out, after an equaliser in added time after extra time from Javi Martínez tied the match at 2-2. Eden Hazard had put Chelsea 2-1 up in extra time after Fernando Torres and Franck Ribéry had earlier scored for their respective sides.
