Fußball-Club Bayern München, known in English as Bayern Munich, is a German sports club based in Munich, Bavaria, best known for its professional football team. The most successful football club in German history, the club was founded in 1900 by eleven football players led by Franz John. Although Bayern won their first national championship in 1932, the club was not selected for the Bundesliga at its inception in 1963, gaining promotion two years later. In the mid-1970s the club had its period of greatest success, when the famous team led by Franz Beckenbauer won the European Cup three times in a row (1974–76).
Chelsea and Bayern first met in a competitive match in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2005, Chelsea progressed after winning 6-5 on aggregate, with future Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack captaining the German side. In 2012 the Bavarians were Chelsea's opponents in the UEFA Champions League final, which was being staged at Bayern's home stadium. The Blues famously won on penalties; Didier Drogba equalising as full time approached before stroking home the winning penalty with what was his last kick as a Chelsea player.
