Before Chelsea
Édouard Mendy rose through the French lower leagues and semi-professional level before earning a chance with Reims in Ligue 1. After impressing in the French top flight, he moved to Rennes in 2019, where he had a standout season helping the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time. His commanding presence, shot-stopping ability, and late-career rise caught the attention of Chelsea, who signed him in 2020 as a replacement for the underperforming Kepa Arrizabalaga.
2020–21 Season
Mendy made an instant impact at Chelsea, establishing himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper within weeks of arriving. He brought calmness, consistency, and reliability to the backline. He kept 16 clean sheets in the Premier League and was a key figure in Chelsea’s Champions League-winning run, keeping 9 clean sheets in 12 appearances—tying the competition record for a debut season. His performances earned him a place in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season, and he was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe that year.
2021–22 Season
Mendy continued his excellent form into his second season, helping Chelsea win the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. He was again pivotal in the Champions League and played a major role in Chelsea reaching the League Cup and FA Cup finals, both of which they lost on penalties. Mendy also shone internationally, winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal in February 2022 and being named the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper. He kept 14 Premier League clean sheets and was generally solid, though his form dipped slightly toward the season's end.
2022–23 Season
Mendy began the season as the starter but suffered a poor run of form and injury problems. He made several high-profile errors early in the campaign, and with the arrival of new manager Graham Potter, he was gradually replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga as the first-choice keeper. Mendy made only a few appearances after the World Cup and was largely out of favour for the rest of the season.
In June 2023, Mendy left Chelsea to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. His departure marked the end of a highly successful yet turbulent spell in West London, where he played a key role in the club’s European success but ultimately lost his place in the starting XI.
