Chelsea were involved in another pre-season mini-tournament at the start of the 1996/976 season when they were invited to play in the Umbro Trophy, losing in the final to Ajax.
Prior to this Chelsea had played five friendly matches. They subsequently played a further three friendly games before finishing the season with a brief three-match tour of the Far East.
