Before Chelsea
Ben Chilwell joined the Leicester City academy in 2009 and progressed through the ranks, signing his first professional contract in 2015. That same year, he was loaned to Huddersfield Town, where he gained valuable first-team experience in the Championship, making 8 appearances. Chilwell returned to Leicester and made his senior debut in October 2015 in an EFL Cup match.
He made his Premier League debut in December 2016 and became a regular starter during the 2017–18 season. Known for his pace, overlapping runs, and ability to deliver accurate crosses, he soon established himself as one of the most promising left-backs in England. Between 2015 and 2020, Chilwell made 123 appearances for Leicester, scoring 4 goals. He was a key part of the team that qualified for European competition and consistently challenged the top six.
Chelsea career
2020–21 Season
On 26 August 2020, Chilwell signed for Chelsea on a five-year deal for a reported fee of around £45 million. He made his debut on 23 September in an EFL Cup win over Barnsley, providing an assist. He scored his first goal for Chelsea in a 4–0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace on 3 October. Throughout the season, he was a regular under Frank Lampard and later Thomas Tuchel, contributing both defensively and offensively as a left-back or wing-back.
He made 42 appearances in all competitions, scored 3 goals, and provided 7 assists. His form in the latter part of the season was outstanding, including a strong performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final. Chilwell started in the 2021 UEFA Champions League Final, helping Chelsea to a 1–0 victory over Manchester City to lift the trophy. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and reached the FA Cup final.
2021–22 Season
Chilwell began the season in excellent form, scoring 3 goals in his first 6 Premier League appearances. However, on 23 November 2021, he suffered a partial ACL tear in a Champions League match against Juventus. The injury required surgery and ruled him out for the remainder of the season. Prior to the injury, he had made 13 appearances, scored 3 goals, and provided 1 assist. Despite his absence, Chelsea went on to win the FIFA Club World Cup, which he officially collected as part of the squad.
2022–23 Season
After a long recovery, Chilwell returned to action in the 2022–23 season. Under Graham Potter and later Frank Lampard, he played 23 Premier League matches, scoring 2 goals and providing several assists. Across all competitions, he made 30 appearances. His return added much-needed width and balance to Chelsea’s play, particularly in a season filled with inconsistency and injuries across the squad. He often alternated between full-back and wing-back roles depending on the formation.
2023–24 Season
Chilwell’s 2023–24 season was interrupted again by injuries, including a hamstring problem that sidelined him for extended periods. Under Mauricio Pochettino, he made only 13 Premier League appearances, mostly as a substitute, and played 21 times across all competitions. Despite his limited involvement, he remained a senior figure in the dressing room and was often used in leadership roles on the bench. His attacking contributions were more limited this season, and he did not score or assist.
2024–25 Season
Ben Chilwell’s future at Chelsea became uncertain in August 2024 after manager Enzo Maresca stated he wasn’t part of his plans. He made just one appearance that season, coming on as a substitute in an EFL Cup win over Barrow. On 3 February 2025, he joined Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the season. Although he didn’t feature in the FA Cup final, he was part of the squad as Palace won the trophy for the first time in their history. Chilwell scored his first goal for the club on 20 May in a 4–2 win over Wolves.
