Pre-Chelsea career

Bertrand caught the eye at the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup as a then 14 year-old playmaker for Burkina Faso. He garnered much attention but eventually surfaced at Chelsea in 2010.

Chelsea career

Bertrand was initially limited to non-competitive and unofficial outings for Chelsea at Under-18 and Under-21 levels due to his official status as a trialist. He did however appear for the Blues in all three games of the 2013 pre-season tour of Asia, making an impact by scoring two goals.

On 31 October 2013 he signed a four-and-a-half year contract with the club, though at the time he was yet to receive a work permit, making a January loan to a European side likely. Duly, on January 2nd 2014, it was announced that he would join feeder club Vitesse Arnhem until the end of the 2013-14 season. He duly impressed, scoring three goals in a little more than a dozen appearances and showed versatility by often lining up as a centre-forward.

He returned to the club on loan for the 2014-15 season and caught fire in late November, when manager Peter Bosz decided to utilise him as a centre-forward rather than a winger. He never looked back, scoring 17 goals to help fire Vitesse into the Europa League and develop his own personal reputation as one of Europe's hottest teenage commodities.

In June 2015 it was widely speculated that he had secured a UK Work Permit to play for Chelsea ahead of the 2015-16 season. During a tumultuous campaign for the club he nonetheless flirted with a first-team breakthrough, scoring four goals, including his first in the Premier League against Stoke City. Despite this, he was unable to force his way into Antonio Conte's squad in 2016-17 and instead moved on loan to Ajax, reuniting with Bosz at another club. He scored 13 goals en route to finishing second in the Eredivisie and reaching the Europa League Final, which Ajax lost to Manchester United and Jose Mourinho.

On June 26th 2017 he signed a five-year deal with Lyon - who he scored against in the Europa League Semi Finals - for a fee of €10m, with Chelsea retaining 15% of the profits on any subsequent transfer.

International

Bertrand is a full international for Burkina Faso, having made his debut as a 15 year-old just days before his birthday in September 2011. He played at the 2012 African Cup of Nations and served as his country's Under-20 captain. He has become a regular full international for them.
