Christian Pulisic is an American winger who joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019, completing the move in July of the same year. Pulisic arrived at Chelsea as a highly promising talent and had standout moments—particularly in his first season and during the Champions League run—but persistent injuries and tactical inconsistency ultimately prevented him from fulfilling his full potential at Stamford Bridge. After four years spent in the club, he joined AC Milan in summer 2023.

Before Chelsea

Pulisic rose to prominence at Borussia Dortmund, where he became the youngest non-German to score in the Bundesliga at age 17. He broke into the first team during the 2015–16 season and quickly gained attention for his explosive pace, close control, and maturity on the ball. In total, he made over 100 appearances for Dortmund, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2016–17. His form in Germany made him a trailblazer for American players in Europe and led to Chelsea securing his signing in early 2019.

Chelsea career

2019–20 Season

Pulisic’s debut season saw him grow into one of Chelsea’s most exciting attacking players. After a slow introduction under Frank Lampard, he found form in autumn, including a perfect hat-trick at Burnley. He ended the Premier League campaign with 9 goals and 4 assists in just 25 appearances and was influential in securing a top-four finish. He also scored in the FA Cup final before suffering a hamstring injury. Despite fitness concerns, his debut campaign was widely praised.

2020–21 Season

Pulisic’s second season was disrupted by injuries and a lack of consistent minutes, but he still played a key role under new manager Thomas Tuchel. He scored and assisted in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, becoming a historic figure as the first American to play in a Champions League final, which Chelsea won against Manchester City. He made 43 appearances in total, contributing 6 goals and several key performances late in the season.

2021–22 Season

Deployed in various attacking roles, including as a wing-back and false nine, Pulisic struggled to hit a strong run of form. He managed 8 goals in 38 appearances, but competition and frequent rotation limited his impact. He was part of the squads that won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, though he was increasingly used as a squad player rather than a consistent starter.

2022–23 Season

Pulisic’s final season at Chelsea was defined by limited playing time and ongoing injury setbacks. He featured in just 30 matches across all competitions—mostly from the bench—and scored only one goal. Chelsea’s poor season and constant managerial changes further affected squad stability. In July 2023, he transferred to AC Milan, ending a four-year spell in west London.

He played in the 2019 and 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cups and was instrumental in the U.S. winning the 2021 Nations League, scoring in the final against Mexico. Known for his speed, creativity, and leadership, he’s considered the face of modern American national football team.
