Before Chelsea

Marcos Alonso began his career at Real Madrid, making one senior appearance before moving to Bolton Wanderers in 2010. After a brief stint with Sunderland, his career blossomed in Serie A with Fiorentina, where he developed into a highly effective attacking full-back. His performances in Italy, especially as a wing-back, attracted the attention of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, who brought him in as part of a tactical revamp.

Chelsea career

2016–17 Season

Alonso quickly established himself as the starting left wing-back in Conte’s 3–4–3 system. His attacking instincts, technical ability, and eye for goal made him one of the surprise success stories of the title-winning season. He scored important goals, including a brace against Leicester.

2017–18 Season

Alonso continued to thrive in the wing-back role, adding more goals to his game. His free-kick ability and late runs into the box made him a constant threat. He played a key role in Chelsea's run to the FA Cup, starting in the final victory over Manchester United.

2018–19 Season

A new manager - Maurizio Sarri - decided to move Alonnso into a more traditional full-back role in a back four. While still contributing offensively, his defensive limitations became more apparent. He featured regularly, including in the Europa League final, helping Chelsea defeat Arsenal.

2019–20 Season

Alonso had a mixed season, in and out of the side depending on Chelsea’s formation. He produced some key performances, including a brace against Bournemouth and a last-minute winner vs Newcastle United. However, he struggled defensively in a back four.

2020–21 Season

Frozen out under Frank Lampard, Alonso returned under Thomas Tuchel when the team switched to a back five. He scored on his comeback against Burnley and was a squad player in the run to Chelsea’s Champions League triumph, although he didn't feature in the final.

2021–22 Season

With Ben Chilwell injured for most of the season, Alonso became the first-choice left wing-back. He contributed 5 goals, and experience in a long campaign that saw Chelsea win UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. He left Chelsea in summer 2022 to join FC Barcelona on a free transfer.

International

Marcos Alonso made his debut for Spain’s senior team in 2018, following strong club performances. Despite limited appearances due to fierce competition at left-back, he was called up occasionally over the years, including for UEFA Nations League matches. While not a regular starter, his attacking qualities and set-piece ability made him a useful squad option during his time with the national team.
