The Mears Family founded Chelsea in 1905 and were its owners until 1982.
The principal family members were:
- Gus Mears – founder of Chelsea, club director 1905-12
- Joseph Mears – brother of Gus, club director 1905-35
- Joe Mears – son of Joseph, club chairman 1940-66.
- Brian Mears – son of Joe, club chairman 1969-81.
