Before Chelsea
Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, de Lucas emerged through the ranks of RCD Espanyol, making his first team debut on May 15, 1998, at Real Valladolid, in his sole appearance of the season, being immediately promoted to the main squad. Subsequently, he became an important offensive element for the Catalonians, appearing in 30 first division matches with four goals in 2000-01, while helping the club to the Copa del Rey.
Chelsea career
After his contract expired in 2002, and after an unassuming loan spell at Paris Saint-Germain the previous year, Claudio Ranieri signed de Lucas for Chelsea, beating off interest from Alaves, with whom de Lucas had signed a pre-contract agreement.
de Lucas made his debut in a 3-2 win against Charlton Athletic, and played in the following match, against Manchester United, but his chances were limited, with almost a third of his appearances over the course of the season made as a substitute. His only Chelsea goal in 31 appearances was a well executed chip in the UEFA Cup against Viking FK in a 2-1 win (5-4 loss on aggregate).
de Lucas left Chelsea after one season, with the club retrospectively declaring his contract invalid as he had signed an agreement to join Alaves before joining Chelsea. de Lucas later sued Chelsea for £2.5m in damages for ending his contract [1].
After Chelsea
de Lucas then returned to Spain, having a huge impact at Deportivo Alavés, although most of his stint was spent in the Second Division. After another level two season, de Lucas became Real Murcia's first signing after it achieved a top level return in 2007. In his first year, he featured heavily, notably scoring in a 1-1 home draw against Real Madrid, but Murcia returned to the second division. In August 2009, de Lucas reportedly had a trial with Blackpool, after his Murcia link had expired, however, he signed with FC Cartagena.
International career
de Lucas made four appearances for the Spanish under-21 side, in a one-year span.
