Before Chelsea

Starting his career at Coventry City, Middlesbrough-born Livingstone made several appearances for the Sky Blues from 1986 until 1991, when he was sold to ambitious second-tier side Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £450,000 in January. Rovers won promotion to the newly formed Premier League under Kenny Dalglish, but Livingstone only appeared twice for the club during the 1992-93 season before signing for Chelsea towards the end of the campaign.

Chelsea career

Livingstone was signed for Chelsea by manager David Webb in March 1993 for a fee of £350,000. He made his debut in April, replacing Neil Shipperley early in the second half of a 3-0 away defeat to Manchester United. With Webb departing in the summer Livingstone found himself surplus to requirements under new boss Glenn Hoddle, and was loaned to Port Vale at the start of the 1993-94 season. Upon his return to Stamford Bridge following his one month loan, Livingstone joined First Division side Grimsby Town for a fee of £140,000 in October 1993.

After Chelsea

Livingstone went on to establish himself as an important player at Blundell Park, and spent ten years at the club, helping Grimsby to promotion back to the second tier in 1998 via the play-offs; a season in which the Mariners also won the Football League Trophy. His latter years at the club were blighted by injury, but overall he enjoyed a successful career at Grimsby. In April 2003 he joined Carlisle United on loan, before joining the Cumbrian side permanently in the summer. After a handful of appearances (and two red cards) he retired from playing in January 2004 due to a back injury.
