Sylvan James Anderton (born 23 November 1934 in Reading) played for Chelsea as a wing half between 1959 and 1962, having signed from Reading during the 1958-59 season.
Club career
Anderton started his career at hometown club Reading, making 167 appearances and scoring 19 goals between 1952 and 1958.[1] He made the step up to the First Division in 1959, signing for Chelsea for a significant fee of £10,000 or £15,000 (sources vary). His debut, a 4-0 defeat to Leeds United, was a match to forget, but he quickly established himself in the line-up; starting every game for the remainder of the 1958-59 season. He was near-ever present the following season, and scored his first goal for the club against Blackburn Rovers in November. Anderton only appeared in around half of Chelsea's 1960-61 matches, and he was eventually sold to Queens Park Rangers in 1962. He later appeared for Dover.
