Timo Werner is a German forward who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in July 2020. Before Chelsea
Werner began his professional career at VfB Stuttgart, where he became their youngest-ever debutant and goalscorer. He moved to RB Leipzig in 2016, where he developed into one of Europe’s most prolific strikers. Known for his pace, pressing, and movement off the ball, Werner scored 95 goals in 159 appearances for Leipzig. In the 2019–20 season, he netted 28 goals in the Bundesliga, finishing as the league’s second top scorer. His form attracted widespread interest, and Chelsea secured his signing ahead of the 2020–21 campaign.
Chelsea career
2020–21 Season
Werner’s debut season at Chelsea was a mix of promise and frustration. He started brightly under Frank Lampard with goals and assists across the Premier League and Champions League. However, as the season progressed, he struggled with finishing consistency, enduring long goal droughts despite high work rate and intelligent movement. After Thomas Tuchel took over mid-season, Werner continued to be a regular starter due to his tactical discipline. He scored 12 goals and registered 15 assists across all competitions. Importantly, he played a vital role in Chelsea’s Champions League-winning run, contributing directly to key goals against Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, and starting in the final against Manchester City.
2021–22 Season
Werner’s second season was again disrupted by inconsistent form, injuries, and increased competition from new signing Romelu Lukaku. He made 37 appearances, scoring 11 goals, including braces in the Champions League and Premier League. Though often used in rotation, he delivered important contributions late in the season, particularly in a purple patch during March and April. He featured in both domestic cup finals, which Chelsea lost on penalties to Liverpool, and added to his medal tally with the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles.
The German international returned to RB Leipzig in August 2022, bringing an end to his two-year stay in west London. Though his goal return never matched expectations, he was valued for his off-ball movement, selfless play, and team-first attitude.
