With the outbreak of the 2nd. World War, competitive football came to a halt on the 3rd. September 1939. Chelsea had already held their annual “Blues v Reds” trial match as well as playing Brentford. Now the only way forward, at least on a temporary basis, was to play friendly matches. And that situation was to continue until almost the end of October 1939.
