Damian Matthew (born 23 September 1970 in Islington, London) was a midfielder who played for Chelsea from 1989-1994.

Chelsea career

Having played for Chelsea's youth team, Matthew made his debut in 1990, playing in a 3-0 win against Crystal Palace. First team opportunities were subsequently limited and though he was issued with the number 8 when FA Premier League squad numbers were introduced in 1993-94, Matthew left Chelsea in February 1994 having playing 21 league games, 8 of which had been as a substitute.

After Chelsea

Matthew next played for Crystal Palace but once again his first team chances were limited. He then played for Burnley and Northampton Town before retiring from playing professionally in 1999 at the age of 29.

He took up a coaching role in Chelsea's academy, and worked his way up to become coach of the Under-16 team in the mid-2000s. In 2007 he moved to Charlton Athletic to become their Under-18 manager, and as of early 2010 he was the Interim Manager in charge of their Reserve team.
