Douglas Martin Smale was a London-born player who made 9 appearances for Chelsea prior to the Second World War, having previously played for local side Kingstonian. A winger, he played in the last 6 games of the 1936-37 season, and the first game of the 1937-38 season – a 6-1 thrashing of Liverpool at Stamford Bridge – but didn't appear again until the penultimate match of the season. His final appearance for the club was on 31 December 1938. Following the War, Smale appeared for Colchester United, having been stationed at Colchester Garrison. Soldiers stationed there were entitled to play for Colchester despite their registration being held by a different club. [1]
