Before Chelsea
Gökhan grew up in the Bayer Leverkusen academy, joining at the age of 11. He moved to Chelsea in January 2009.
Chelsea career
A left-footed winger or attacking midfielder, Gökhan arrived with a short and squat frame, but with deceptive pace and strength, and fine ball skills. He is blessed with time and patience on the ball and can pick a pass well. He shoots with power and occasional accuracy, but can be wayward and selfish at times, preferring to go alone or shoot when a better option is available. He does undeniably have end product though, scoring and assisting in good numbers.
He took a few games to settle but once he had, he began to show that he was probably too good for the Under-18 league. The 2009 summer saw him step into the Reserve fold and he did not look out of place, although he played extensively for the Under-18s in 2009-10. He led the team in assists and started to make more of an impact at the next level.
Having graduated from youth team football, Gökhan has spent the 2010-11 season at reserve level, refining his game in impressive fashion. Despite being one of the players of the season, he was sold in June 2011 to Hamburger SV, joining Michael Mancienne and Jacopo Sala.
After Chelsea
Gökhan was a revelation in his first half-season in Germany, putting in some terrific performances and confirming himself as one of Europe's most capable dribblers. However, a combination of injury and a change of manager impacted his progress in the second half of the 2011-12 season and he fell out of favour with Thorsten Fink.
In July 2012 he joined Russian club Rubin Kazan for a reported €6m, of which 50% went to Chelsea. A series of off-field problems saw him join Besiktas on loan for the 2013-14 season.
International
Gökhan has represented Turkey at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-21 levels. He made his Under-21 debut on March 3rd 2010 as a second-half substitute at home to Slovakia.
In June 2011 he was given a maiden full call-up by Turkey manager Guus Hiddink and was named as a substitute for the Euro 2012 Qualifier away to Belgium.
