Before Chelsea
Higuaín began his professional career with River Plate in 2005, making his debut at the age of 17. He quickly gained attention for his goal-scoring ability, netting 13 goals in 35 appearances before moving to Europe.
In January 2007, Higuaín signed for Real Madrid for €12 million. Over six-and-a-half seasons, he scored over 100 goals for the club, helping them win three La Liga titles (2006–07, 2007–08, 2011–12) and a Copa del Rey (2010–11). His best league season came in 2009–10, when he scored 27 goals in 32 appearances.
Higuaín joined Napoli in July 2013 for €40 million. He became one of Serie A's top scorers, most notably in the 2015–16 season, when he broke a 66-year-old record by scoring 36 goals in a single Serie A campaign. During his time at Napoli, he won the Coppa Italia (2013–14) and Supercoppa Italiana (2014).
In July 2016, Higuaín transferred to Juventus for €90 million, then the highest transfer fee ever paid by an Italian club. He continued his success, winning three Serie A titles (2016–17, 2017–18, 2019–20) and two Coppa Italia trophies.
On 2 August 2018, Higuaín joined AC Milan on a season-long loan from Juventus as part of a deal that also saw Leonardo Bonucci return to Juventus. The loan included an option to buy.
Higuaín scored his first goal for Milan on 16 September 2018 in a 1–0 win over Cagliari. He went on to score 8 goals in 22 appearances for the Rossoneri, including a brace against Chievo and strikes in Serie A and the UEFA Europa League.
Despite a promising start, his form declined later in the year, and his frustration was evident—particularly in a high-profile match against Juventus in which he missed a penalty and was later sent off. With Milan struggling for consistency and Juventus signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Higuaín’s future was uncertain, and the club opted not to make the deal permanent.
Chelsea career
On 23 January 2019, Higuaín joined Chelsea on loan for the remainder of the 2018–19 season, reuniting with manager Maurizio Sarri, under whom he had thrived at Napoli.
Higuaín made his debut on 27 January in a 3–0 FA Cup win against Sheffield Wednesday. He scored his first goals for the club on 2 February 2019, netting a brace in a 5–0 Premier League victory over Huddersfield Town.
During his short stint at Chelsea, Higuaín made 18 appearances in all competitions and scored 5 goals. While his form was mixed, he contributed to Chelsea's third-place finish and was part of the squad that won the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League, though he did not feature in the final.
On 1 July 2019, Higuaín returned to Juventus after Chelsea opted not to extend his loan deal beyond the 2018–19 season.
