Pre-Chelsea career
Ian joined Chelsea from PSV in the summer of 2018.
Chelsea career
Ian was a youth team regular in his first season at the club, making rapid progress to feature all the way to the UEFA Youth League Final for the Under-19s, and became a Development Squad regular shortly after his 17th birthday. He made his first-team debut in September 2019 in a League Cup tie against Grimsby.
Seeking senior experience, Maatsen spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Charlton Athletic. He featured in 34 league matches, scored once, and exhibited his attacking instincts from left-back, earning valuable match exposure.
The following season saw him at Coventry City, where he became a key figure. In 40 league appearances, he contributed 3 goals and provided consistent attacking width down the left flank.
Maatsen’s next loan to Burnley proved pivotal. He featured in 39 league games, scoring 4 times, and played a central role in playing Burnley to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League.
In the 2023–24 season, Ian Maatsen was part of Chelsea’s first-team squad but featured sparingly. He made 12 Premier League appearances and appeared in 3 EFL Cup matches, totaling 15 first-team outings across all competitions. While he didn’t score, these appearances provided essential exposure and helped him gain experience at senior level.
In January 2024, Maatsen joined Borussia Dortmund on loan. Here, he delivered standout performances, including a Champions League quarter-final goal and appearance in the final. He finished with around 23 appearances across competitions and earned a place in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.
International
Ian has represented the Netherlands up to Under-21 level and was named in their Euro 2024 squad.
