The UEFA Youth League is an Under-19 competition which mirrors the senior UEFA Champions League. UEFA announced the inauguration of the competition in early 2013, when European youth teams were playing in the NextGen Series in the absence of an equivalent UEFA tournament. The 32 teams qualifying for the Group Stage will all see their junior counterparts face off in an identical draw, with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the knockout rounds. The Finals weekend takes place in Nyon, Switzerland.

Chelsea won the competition in both 2015 and 2016 but were not allowed to defend their title the following year as neither they nor the first team qualified for the competition by conventional means, and UEFA had at that point not allocated an automatic place to the title holders.
