Chelsea career

Thompson had previously played as a winger, but was converted to a centre forward upon joining Chelsea for the 1927-28 season from Luton Town. He scored on his debut at Reading, and was top scorer for the campaign with 25 goals, helping Chelsea finish 3rd in Division 2, just missing out on promotion to the top flight. He would play for Chelsea for one more season, a relatively disappointing campaign in which Chelsea finished 9th, though Thompson was again top scorer, this time jointly with two other players, and with a more modest total of 9 goals.

After Chelsea

Following a much-travelled playing career he managed Dartford F.C. and later worked as a scout at Chelsea and Southampton.

Chelsea scout

In his scouting role at Chelsea he played a particularly significant role at the club in the 1950s and 60s, signing several subsequently successful players, with many hailing from his native East End of London. He is credited with having discovered, among others, Jimmy Greaves, Barry Bridges and Terry Venables. Thompson died in Epsom in August 1984.
