From 1892 until 1992, the Football League Second Division was the second highest division overall in English football. This ended with the creation of the FA Premier League, prior to the start of the 1992-93 season, which caused an administrative split between The Football League and the teams making up the new Premiership, which had previously been Football League Division One. The second tier in English football is now known as The Championship.

Chelsea were elected to the Football League shortly after foundation in 1905, entering the Second Division for the 1905-06 season. The club won promotion to the First Division after two seasons, and have since spent the majority of their history in the top flight, with nineteen seasons in total spent in the second tier, mainly in the 1920s and during a period of financial uncertainty in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Chelsea have been Second Division champions twice, on the last two occasions that the club competed at that level; in 1983-84 and 1988-89.
