The 2002 FA Cup Final was an all-London affair between Arsenal and Chelsea at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, which hosted English domestic cup finals while Wembley Stadium was being rebuilt. It was Chelsea's seventh appearance in an FA Cup final. Arsenal won 2-0, with goals from Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg. Chelsea were led onto the field by Roberto Di Matteo, who had been forced to retire from football earlier in the season due to a serious injury.
Chelsea's build-up to the final was hampered by injury problems. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had been a major doubt with a calf injury, and manager Claudio Ranieri took a gamble on his fitness that didn't pay off; the Dutchman struggled and was replaced midway through the second half. John Terry woke up with a virus on the day of the game that affected his balance, and was subsequently only named as a substitute, while Graeme Le Saux had been suffering from a calf strain but completed the match.

Match review
A largely uneventful first half saw two chances for Arsenal, with Dennis Bergkamp and Lauren both squandering good opportunities. Immediately after the break Carlo Cudicini made an excellent save from Thierry Henry, and the game subsequently improved with Chelsea applying pressure in the form of an angled effort from Eidur Gudjohnsen that required an excellent save from David Seaman. Two minutes after Hasselbaink was replaced by Gianfranco Zola Arsenal took the lead. Ray Parlour burst towards the Chelsea goal before unleashing a spectacular 25 yard effort into the top corner. The victory was effectively sealed ten minutes later, when Freddie Ljungberg doubled Arsenal's lead with an even more impressive long-range strike.
