Pre-Chelsea career
Alfie joined Chelsea from West London rivals QPR as an Under-11.
Chelsea career
Alfie established himself as a regular in the Under-18s' defence in his first year as a scholar and earned a Development Squad debut before the end of the campaign. He progressed through every youth level, captaining both the U18s and U23s, and earned recognition for his leadership and development within Chelsea’s elite youth setup.
Gilchrist made his senior debut in December 2023 under Mauricio Pochettino, appearing as a late substitute in a win over Crystal Palace. His first senior start followed in the FA Cup, and he scored his maiden goal later in the season during a memorable 6–0 victory over Everton. That campaign included 17 first-team appearances in total. He was also named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Season, becoming the first centre-back to receive the honor since Fikayo Tomori.
To gain regular first-team experience, Gilchrist joined Sheffield United on loan for the season. There, he made over 30 Championship appearances, delivering consistent defending and versatility across the back line.
He left the club in August 2025 to join West Bromwich Albion permanently.
