John Neal was manager of Chelsea from 1981 until 1985. Having taken charge during one of the most perilous periods of Chelsea's history, he narrowly avoided relegation to the Third Division in 1983, and led the Blues to promotion back to the top flight the following season. He also signed several significant players during his time at Stamford Bridge, including David Speedie, Kerry Dixon, Pat Nevin, Nigel Spackman and Eddie Niedzwiecki.
