UEFA Super Cup is an annual game between the reigning champions of the
UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League (formerly
UEFA Cup). It takes place at the start of the domestic season, in August, normally on a Friday. The competition was established in 1972, and was contested between the winners of the European Cup/
UEFA Champions League and
UEFA Cup Winners' Cup until 1999 when the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was discontinued.
Having won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1997-98, Chelsea competed in the Super Cup match early in the following season, beating Real Madrid 1-0 in Monaco, with Gustavo Poyet scoring the only goal.
