The 1997 Charity Shield was contested between 1997 FA Cup-winners Chelsea and 1996-97 League champions Manchester United. It was Chelsea's third appearance in the annual season-opener. The match ended in a draw, Ronny Johnsen equalising shortly after Mark Hughes had opened the scoring for Chelsea. The destination of the trophy was decided by a penalty shoot-out after 90 minutes, which Manchester United won 4-2. Ed de Goey made his debut in this match.
