Steve Clarke is a former right-back who joined Chelsea from St Mirren for £422,000 in January 1987. A dependable player, he was with the club as they were relegated in 1988, promoted again in 1989, and won their first major trophies since the 1970s: the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He was named Chelsea's Player of the Year in 1994 and in 2005 was voted into Chelsea's Centenary XI.[1]
Clarke left Chelsea in the summer of 1998 to be assistant manager to Ruud Gullit at Newcastle United. He returned to Chelsea as a youth coach, and when new manager José Mourinho took over in 2004, he appointed Clarke as his assistant. Clarke was with the club as they won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup. Clarke remained at Chelsea after Mourinho's departure, before leaving the club in 2008 to be assistant to Gianfranco Zola at West Ham United, which was followed by a stint as first team coach under Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool.
