Petar Borota (5 March 1953 – 12 February 2010) was a Yugoslavian goalkeeper who played for Chelsea from 1979 to 1982. Voted Chelsea player of the year in 1981, he was particularly known for his eccentric and erratic style.

Before Chelsea
Borota began his career with OFK Beograd, before moving on to Partizan Belgrade in 1976. He soon became a regular in the Partizan side, and was a league winner with them in 1978. However, on one infamous occasion Borota caught the ball in the area and, with the ball still in his hands, walked into the goal to retrieve his cap, thus conceding a goal and costing Partizan a win.
Chelsea career
Borota was signed for Chelsea by Danny Blanchflower in March 1979 for £70,000, as a replacement for Peter Bonetti. Borota made his debut against champions-elect Liverpool and impressed in a 0-0 draw, although Chelsea were relegated just weeks later. His eccentric nature also quickly came to prominence; on occasions, he would dribble up the field with the ball and attempt to get past opposition players. Such antics helped make him a cult figure at the club. He was voted Chelsea player of the year in 1981 after keeping 16 clean sheets that season.
However, his erratic behaviour sometimes backfired and led to the team conceding goals. In a match against Watford in February 1981 he was caught in possession upfield, allowing Watford to score the winner. Borota fell out with new Chelsea manager John Neal and joined Brentford in 1982, having made 114 appearances for the club and kept 36 clean sheets.
After Chelsea
He left Brentford shortly afterwards without appearing for the first team, and went on to have stints with Portuguese sides Portimonense, Boavista and FC Porto. He died on 12 February 2010 after a long illness.
