Before Chelsea
Diego Costa began his European career with loan spells after leaving Brazil, including stints at Braga, Celta Vigo, and Albacete, before making his mark with Real Valladolid in La Liga. His breakthrough came at Atlético Madrid, where he became a prolific scorer, winning La Liga and reaching the Champions League final.
Chelsea career
2014–15 Season
Costa joined Chelsea in July 2014 for around £32 million. He made an explosive start—scoring on his competitive debut against Burnley and delivering a league hat-trick in just his fourth match. He finished the season with 20 Premier League goals, earning Player of the Month in August and leading Chelsea to the first Premier League title since 2010.
2015–16 Season
Despite injury setbacks, Costa remained potent, netting 12 Premier League goals and adding a Champions League goal. His aggressive style and physical presence continued to make him a key figure under new management.
2016–17 Season
Costa enjoyed his most prolific campaign—20 league goals before a fallout with manager Antonio Conte led to his exclusion. He still played a vital role in Chelsea’s second Premier League title in three years, scoring his 52nd goal on his 100th appearance.
A protracted transfer saga resulted in Costa's return to Atlético Madrid in early 2018, ending his Chelsea tenure—which included 89 league appearances, 52 goals, and 16 assists.
International
Costa played twice for Brazil in friendly matches in 2013, but was granted Spanish citizenship in September of the same year and thereafter chose to represent his adopted country. He made his debut for Spain in March 2014, and was selected in the squad for that summer's FIFA World Cup squad. He and Spain suffered a disappointing tournament, making a shock exit at the group stage.
