The 1939/40 Football season opened like any other, despite the threat of the Second World War in the air. The Football League, the London Combination and all other leagues commenced the new season at the end of August 1939. However, just a few days later, on the 3rd. September 1945, War was declared and soccer was suspended at virtually all levels.

Chelsea had already played 3 Football League matches, as well as the 'Blues' v 'Reds' trial match and a friendly against Brentford. The Reserves had also played 3 games.

Non-competitive football was then the only football played until the Regional Competitions commenced on the 21st. October 1939.

This is a list of all the known games played by both teams during this season.
