James was a schoolboy at Arsenal but moved to the Chelsea academy at the age of 14.

Chelsea career

He shared Under-18 goalkeeping duties with Rhys Taylor and Nick Hamann and as such never really got the chance to establish himself, although there were occasions on which he put together a run of matches. He did however sign professional terms at the age of 19 and played for the Reserve Team.

At the end of his contract in 2007 he was released on a free transfer.

In 2011 James returned to Chelsea as an academy goalkeeping coach and served as an emergency goalkeeper for a series of reserve team matches.

International

James has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level.
