James Russell (born 19 September 1987 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England) is a goalkeeper who formerly played for Chelsea's Academy team. In 2011 he returned to the club as an academy goalkeeping coach and was named as a substitute for a series of reserve matches.

Pre-Chelsea career
James was a schoolboy at Arsenal but moved to the Chelsea academy at the age of 14.
Chelsea career
He shared Under-18 goalkeeping duties with Rhys Taylor and Nick Hamann and as such never really got the chance to establish himself, although there were occasions on which he put together a run of matches. He did however sign professional terms at the age of 19 and played for the Reserve Team.
At the end of his contract in 2007 he was released on a free transfer.
In 2011 James returned to Chelsea as an academy goalkeeping coach and served as an emergency goalkeeper for a series of reserve team matches.
International
James has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level.

Post Chelsea Career
James has spent his post-Chelsea career in non-league football, taking in spells at Stevenage Borough, Canvey Island, Halesowen Town and Arseley. He rejoined Canvey in 2009 and won the club's Player of the Season award in 2011-12, before departing for Boreham Wood.
