Henrique Hilário Meireles Alves Sampaio (born 21 October 1975 in Oporto, Portugal), known simply as Henrique Hilário, is a Portuguese international goalkeeper who was at Chelsea from 2006 until 2014. Brought in by José Mourinho as back-up to Petr Čech and Carlo Cudicini, for a time following Cudicini's departure he was second choice after Čech. A reliable back-up, he was called upon on several occasions in the first half of his Chelsea career, but made just three first team appearances in the latter half; his last appearance coming in 2011.

Before Chelsea
Having joined Portuguese first division powerhouse Porto in 1996, Hilário found opportunities hard to come by and served several loan stints in the country. In three seasons (the first on loan) with Madeira's Nacional, he developed as a top-flight keeper.
Chelsea career
2006-07
Hilário joined Chelsea on 1 July 2006 from Nacional, joining former Porto boss José Mourinho, the two having coincided there for a brief period in the 2003-04 pre-season. He was originally signed as third-choice goalkeeper, as back-up to Petr Čech and Carlo Cudicini, but was handed a run in the first team after both Čech and Cudicini sustained injuries in Chelsea's game against Reading on 14 October 2006. Hilário made his Chelsea debut on 18 October, against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win. He made his league debut three days later, against Portsmouth.
Hilário's run in the side saw him make a total of 18 appearances during the 2006-07 season and keep eight clean sheets; he also saved a penalty in an away game against Sheffield United. Čech's return to fitness in February 2007 saw Hilário back on the substitute's bench, and he was an unused replacement in Chelsea's League Cup final win over Arsenal. On the 2006-07 Chelsea season review DVD bonus features, there was a segment entitled "Top Ten Saves of the Season." Several of the saves were Hilário's.
2007-2009
At the start of the 2007-08 season, Hilário found himself again third-choice to both Čech and Cudicini, but made a substitute appearance against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, after the Czech suffered a hip injury. He went on to start against Newcastle United and Fulham, as Chelsea won both matches 2-1. On 8 April 2008, he made a substitute appearance against Fenerbahce, due to an injury to Cudicini, in the second leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, and kept a clean sheet. Portuguese newspapers subsequently hinted at a possible call-up to the Portuguese national side. On 26 January 2009, Cudicini left Chelsea for Tottenham Hotspur, leaving the Portuguese as second-choice, and promoting reserve keeper Rhys Taylor to the first team. On 7 February, Hilário made his first 2008-09 start after an injury to Čech, against Hull City, and kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw. Hilário was an unused substitute during Chelsea's 2009 FA Cup Final win over Everton.2009-2014
On 26 September 2009, when Čech was red carded against Wigan Athletic after a tackle on Hugo Rodallega, he came on for Florent Malouda and let in two goals, one of which was a penalty. Due to Čech's suspension, Hilário was in the starting line-up for the game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on 4 October 2009. He performed well, keeping a clean sheet and received the Barclays Man of the Match award. Hilário made his first appearance in 2010, coming off the bench for an injured Čech, in the second half of Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Internazionale in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second round. However, as the score was 2-1 when Hilário came on, he was rewarded with a personal clean sheet. Hilário made another appearance in the Premier League, this time against Manchester City, and conceded four goals from Carlos Tévez and Craig Bellamy as Chelsea lost 4-2, their first home loss in the 2009-10 season. Hilário was an unused substitute for the FA Cup Final against Portsmouth, picking up a winners' medal.
Hilário appeared in the first match of the 2010-11 season, a Community Shield loss against Manchester United, with Petr Čech injured. However that would be his only appearance of the campaign, with Čech playing in all but two games, and Ross Turnbull deputising on those occasions. Hilário started the second and third matches of the 2011-12 season – Petr Čech having suffered a knee injury in training – but he made no further appearances during the campaign. His contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but in March 2012 he signed a one year extension.
Hilário made no appearances during the 2012-13 campaign however, and served as third-choice goalkeeper behind Čech and Turnbull. In June 2013 it was announced that he would leave Chelsea at the end of his contract, despite Turnbull also leaving the club and Thibaut Courtois set to stay out on loan for another season. However although Chelsea subsequently signed Mark Schwarzer and promoted Jamal Blackman to the senior squad in pre-season, at the start of August it was announced that the Portuguese goalkeeper had re-signed for the club on a one-year contract. However he wasn't subsequently named in the club's Premier League or UEFA Champions League squads, meaning he was only eligible for domestic cup games. He left the club a year later upon the expiry of his contract, having made no further first team appearances.
International
Hilário received his first national team call-up in November 2009 as backup to first-choice Eduardo, a role for which 4 other players have been tried, namely Rui Patrício, José Moreira, Daniel Fernandes and Beto. An unused substitute for the last qualification match for the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina in November 2009, he made his debut in the next match, a friendly against China which Portugal won 2-0 in March 2010, Hilário having replaced Eduardo at half time.
