Wigan Athletic Football Club is a professional football club based in Wigan, Greater Manchester. Wigan Athletic was formed in 1932, following the winding up of Wigan Borough the previous year. Wigan Athletic was the fifth attempt to create a stable football club in the town following the demise of Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town and Wigan Borough. Springfield Park, the former home of Wigan Borough, was purchased by the club and they were elected to the Cheshire County League. Having spent their history in the lower leagues, Wigan were promoted to the Premier League in 2005, the first time the club had reached the top flight. They have played at the DW Stadium since 1999, which they now own, sharing the stadium with rugby league club Wigan Warriors. They previously played at Springfield Park for 67 years.
Following three cup ties in the 1980s between the two clubs, Wigan and Chelsea would meet in the league for the first time on the occasion of Wigan's first ever match in the top flight, in 2005. The newcomers appeared to be heading towards a creditable 0-0 home draw against the English Champions, but Hernán Crespo earned all three points for the Blues with an injury time winner.
