Tranmere Rovers Football Club is a professional football club based at Prenton Park in Birkenhead, Merseyside. Formed in 1884 as Belmont F.C., the team changed its name to Tranmere Rovers less than one year later. They initially competed in the local Liverpool & District League and the Lancashire Combination, before stepping up to the Third Division North in 1921. In more recent years, Tranmere have been known for their cup runs, most notably reaching the 2000 League Cup Final, where they lost 2-1 to Leicester City.
Chelsea have never played Tranmere Rovers in a league match, but there have been meetings in the cups. The clubs were drawn against each other in the FA Cup on three occasions between 1932 and 1963 (two of which were replayed), with Chelsea prevailing on each occasion. There have also been two League Cup ties between the clubs; Chelsea winning over two legs in 1982-83, before Tranmere gained revenge nine years later, knocking Chelsea out in the second round of the competition.
