Scunthorpe United Football Club is a professional team based in the town of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The club was formed in 1899, and in 1910 they merged with local rivals Lindsey United to become Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, joining the Midland Football League in 1912. After an unsuccessful application to join the Football League in 1921, Scunthorpe & Lindsey won the Midland League in 1926-27 and in 1938-39. In 1950 the club was finally accepted into the Football League, ahead of Workington and Wigan Athletic when the league structure was expanded. In 1988 Scunthorpe United became the first English football club in the modern era to move to a new, purpose built stadium, Glanford Park. In recent seasons Scunthorpe have competed in the second tier, retaining their place in 2010 for the first time since the 1960s. This is despite a significantly lower budget than their rivals, with home attendances of 5-6000.
Chelsea's only league meetings with Scunthorpe occurred during the 1962-63 season, in the Second Division, in addition to a League Cup tie, in 1988, and an FA Cup tie in 2005.
