Ipswich Town Football Club are a professional football club based in Ipswich, Suffolk. The club was founded in 1878 and were known as Ipswich A.F.C. until 1888 when they merged with Ipswich Rugby Club to form Ipswich Town Football Club. They did not turn professional until 1936, and were subsequently elected to the Football League in 1938.

The only fully professional football club in Suffolk, Ipswich have won the English league title once, in 1961-62, while managed by future World Cup-winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey, and have been runners-up twice in 1980-81 and 1981-82. They won the FA Cup in 1977-78, and the UEFA Cup in 1980-81, these successes coming under the stewardship of another future England manager, Sir Bobby Robson.

All but two of Chelsea's league meetings with Ipswich have been played in the top flight, with regular meetings for forty years from 1961, the year of the two clubs' first meeting.
