Port Vale Football Club is a professional club based in Burslem, Staffordshire, one of six towns that make up the city of Stoke-on-Trent. The club was formed in 1876, following a meeting at the Port Vale House, from where the club took its name. Port Vale moved to Burslem in 1884, changing its name to Burslem Port Vale, though the club reverted to its original name in 1907. The club has played at Vale Park since 1950, having previously played its home games at four other venues. Port Vale have never played in the top flight, despite spending over forty seasons in the second tier of English football.
Chelsea faced Port Vale in the Blues' first two seasons following foundation in 1905, and several other matches took place in the 1920s; also in the Second Division. The clubs have never met in a cup tie, and haven't met in a competitive match since 1929.
