Darlington Football Club are a professional football team based in the town of Darlington, County Durham. The club's main nickname is The Quakers in reference to the religious movement that had a historic influence on the town. Founded in 1883, and having had success in local competitions, the club turned professional in 1908 and joined the North Eastern League. Shortly after the First World War, Darlington joined the Football League, and have spent most of their history in the lower divisions. They faced Chelsea in the league on four occasions during a brief spell in the Second Division in the mid-1920s, with the only subsequent meeting being a replayed FA Cup tie in 1958.
