Walsall Football Club is a professional football club based in Walsall, West Midlands. The club was founded in 1888 as Walsall Town Swifts, an amalgamation of Walsall Town F.C. and Walsall Swifts F.C. The club was one of the founder members of the Second Division in 1892, but have spent their entire existence outside of English football's top division; their highest league finish was sixth in Division Two in 1898-99. Walsall moved into their Bescot Stadium in 1990, having previously played at nearby Fellows Park. The club's nickname, The Saddlers, reflects Walsall's status as a traditional centre for saddle manufacture.
Chelsea's first match against the Saddlers wasn't until an FA Cup tie in 1955, the season the Blues' were first crowned English Champions. Having never played in the top flight, Walsall's only league meetings with Chelsea came in two seasons when both clubs were in the Second Division. In addition there have been three two-legged League Cup ties between the clubs, with Chelsea prevailing on each occasion.
