Pre-Chelsea career
Jay came into the game as a youngster in Luton Town's academy.
Chelsea career
In 2012, Jay, along with younger twin brothers Cole and Rio, all moved to Chelsea from Luton Town in a much-publicised deal. He made his Under-18 debut against Reading in April 2013 whilst still an Under-15, and became a regular part of the youth team squad as a schoolboy in 2013-14. He also captained the Under-16s to Premier League International Tournament success in October 2013.
Towards the end of the season he moved into an advanced role on the left side of the attack and flourished, turning in a series of impressive performances en route to winning the FA Youth Cup and scoring his first goal of the season in the first leg of the Final against Fulham.
He impressed on first team duty in pre-season after signing scholarship papers and carried that good form into Under-18 football early in the season. He then continued his progressive development by earning a full-time promotion to the Under-21 squad before then finishing the campaign as a FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League winner and with another first team call-up for the tour of Thailand and Australia.
Once again splitting time between three age groups in 2015-16, success at home and in Europe marked him out as not only one of the most successful players of his age group in Europe, but an FA Youth Cup treble meant he and Jake Clarke-Salter joined five Manchester United 'Busby Babes' in a select group of seven players to ever achieve such a feat.
Spending the first half of 2016-17 with the Development Squad took him over 100 appearances in development football for Chelsea, at which point he joined Charlton Athletic on a half-season loan from January 2017. It took him three months to earn his first start under manager Karl Robinson but, once he was in the side, he became almost undroppable, earning several positive reviews for his displays in helping the Addicks avoid relegation. He returned there for a full season in 2017-18, helping them reach the playoffs this time, and finishing as their Player of the Season.
That brought about an opportunity to play Championship football in 2018-19 at Bristol City, where he featured alongside fellow loanees Tomas Kalas and Kasey Palmer. His deal came with an option to buy, something which the Robins triggered mid-season, and Jay opted to sign a four-year deal at Ashton Gate in June 2019 to bring a seven-year association with Chelsea to an end.
International
Jay has been capped by England at every level up to Under-21.
