Luton Town Football Club is an English professional football club based at Kenilworth Road, Luton, Bedfordshire. Formed in 1885, Luton Town was the first club in southern England to turn professional, making payments to players as early as 1890 and turning fully professional a year later. However the Hatters didn't gain promotion to the top division of English football until 1955–56, and did not reach a major final until the 1959 FA Cup Final. Luton Town's most recent successful period began in 1981-82, when the club won the Second Division and promotion to the First Division. After winning the League Cup in 1987-88 with a 3-2 win over Arsenal, Luton remained a First Division club until relegation in 1991-92 signalled the end of major success. More recently, financial difficulties have caused the club to fall from the second tier of English football to the fifth in just three years; relegation to the Conference in 2009 ending the club's 89-year spell as a member of the Football League. They regained Football League status five years later, winning the Conference Premier championship in 2013-14.

Having only previously met in the FA Cup, Chelsea first played Luton in the league following the latter's promotion to the top flight for the first time in 1955. The two sides subsequently met regularly in the league until the early 1990s when Luton were relegated. As of 2015 the last meeting between the clubs was an FA Cup semi-final in 1994, in which Chelsea legend Kerry Dixon played for the Hatters against his former club.
