Pre-Chelsea career

Mason joined Chelsea as a six year-old.

Chelsea career

Mason made his Under-18 debut whilst still an Under-15 during the 2013-14 season and added several more to his name throughout 2014-15. A knee injury hampered the start of his scholarship but he made up for lost time upon his return in October as he scored six goals and created a team-high twelve more whilst forcing his way into the victorious 2015-16 UEFA Youth League and 2015-16 FA Youth Cup teams, scoring in the Semi Final of the former and the Final of the latter.

A Development Squad regular in 2016-17, his rise to prominence continued as he showed off his range of abilities on an even bigger stage, whilst captaining the Under-18s to their fourth FA Youth Cup title in a row. A new four-year contract was the cherry on top of another very productive season, and it yielded a first loan move to Vitesse. Having struggled to earn regular playing time until December, he exploded in the second half of the season, finishing with 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions as he drove the club back into the Europa League for the second year running.

That earned him a move to Derby County, where he would work under the managerial team of Frank Lampard and Jody Morris. Another outstanding season there saw him score 11 goals as the Rams reached the Playoff Final, only to fall short at the last against Aston Villa. Nevertheless, he was impressive enough to earn a promotion to the first team squad at Stamford Bridge upon his return, with Lampard and Morris once again in charge.

He made his long-awaited Blues debut on August 11th 2019 away to Manchester United, and scored his first goal a week later against Leicester City, in his home debut.

2019–20 Season

Mason Mount signed a five-year contract with Chelsea on 15 July 2019 and made his debut on 11 August in a 4–0 loss to Manchester United. He quickly scored his first Chelsea goal against Leicester and followed it with another against Norwich. An ankle injury in September briefly sidelined him.

He scored in the FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester United and ended the season with 53 appearances, a goal and assist on the final day to secure Champions League qualification, and a start in the FA Cup final loss to Arsenal.

2020–21 Season

In 2020–21, Mount continued strongly, scoring against West Brom and captaining Chelsea for the first time in January 2021. He netted a key winner against Liverpool at Anfield and scored his first European goal against Porto in the Champions League quarter-final. He reached 100 Chelsea appearances against Real Madrid and scored in the semi-final second leg to send Chelsea to the final.

Despite early claims of favouritism, Mount earned praise from manager Thomas Tuchel, who called him vital to the team. He was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year and assisted Kai Havertz’s winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City.

2021–22 Season

On 11 August 2021, Mason Mount scored in the shoot-out as Chelsea beat Villarreal to win the UEFA Super Cup. In October, he was shortlisted for the Ballon d'Or, finishing 19th. Later that month, he scored his first goals of the season with a hat-trick in a 7–0 win over Norwich.

In December, Mount became the youngest Chelsea player to score in four straight Premier League games and reached 20 league goals faster than any other player in club history. His strong form earned nominations for Premier League Player and Goal of the Month, though he didn’t win either.

In April 2022, Mount scored in three consecutive matches for the first time, contributing in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup. He marked his 100th Premier League appearance with an assist in a loss to Arsenal.

On 11 May, he hit double digits in both goals and assists for the season—becoming only the fifth Chelsea player to do so and the youngest. Days later, he missed a penalty in the FA Cup Final shootout loss to Liverpool. Despite that, Mount was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season for a second year running—becoming the first to retain the award since Eden Hazard.

2022–23 Season

Mason Mount had a slow start to the 2022–23 season, going seven games without a goal or assist under Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked after a Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb. New manager Graham Potter took over, and Mount soon contributed two assists in a 3–0 win over Wolves on 8 October.

He impressed later that month against AC Milan, winning a penalty and assisting a goal, earning Man of the Match. He then scored his first goals of the season with a brace at Aston Villa and netted again at home against Bournemouth after the World Cup break—his first home goal in over a year.

Injuries disrupted his season, and Chelsea confirmed in April 2023 that Mount had surgery on a pubic bone issue. On 4 July 2023, after 18 years at Chelsea, Mount announced his departure in a farewell video, signing for Manchester United on a five-year deal.

International

Mason has represented England at every age level, making his senior bow in September 2019 against Bulgaria.
