Pre-Chelsea career

Andreas spent his formative years as a part of the Brondby academy in Denmark. He agreed to move for a six-figure fee in early 2012, choosing Chelsea over a number of major European clubs including Arsenal and Manchester City.

Chelsea career

Andreas' Chelsea career began belatedly after a series of international call-ups curtailed his involvement at the start of the 2012-13 season but he made up for lost time by impressing in the Under-18 league and earning regular appearances in the Under-21 fold. He impressed enough to earn consideration mid-season as an emergency selection in the first team squad for a League Cup tie away to Leeds United, and despite missing out, he was eventually named on the first team bench on the final day of the season at home to Everton, being assigned the number 32 shirt.

He went on to play in a pair of post-season friendlies in the United States against Manchester City, playing well at centre back in both St. Louis and New York City. A regular Under-21 berth awaited him upon returning to that level for 2013-14, and he was amongst the most consistently impressive players during the first half of that season. That good form continued late into the campaign and he was an integral part at the hear of a team that won the Under-21 Premier League and the FA Youth Cup.

Andreas made his first team debut on 28 October 2014, in a 2-1 away win against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup, playing the full match at right back. He went on to make two further first-team appearances including a Premier League debut against Sunderland on the final day of the season.

On July 10th 2015 it was announced that he would join Borussia Mönchengladbach on a two-year loan deal. After starring there, he returned to Chelsea to become a regular member of the first-team squad.

2017-18 Season

Returning from Germany, Christensen was integrated directly into the first team by Conte. He quickly established himself as a regular in Chelsea’s back three, starting key league and Champions League matches. His elegant passing and positioning stood out, though a couple of high-profile errors mid-season slightly dented his momentum. Despite the club finishing 5th, he was seen as one of the season’s breakout stars and earned a nomination for Chelsea’s Young Player of the Year.

2018-19 Season

Under Maurizio Sarri, Christensen saw reduced league involvement due to David Luiz and Antonio Rüdiger being the preferred pairing. However, he was a regular starter in the Europa League, playing nearly every match en route to Chelsea’s triumph in the final against Arsenal. His calm presence helped secure several clean sheets, and he played a crucial role in the 4–1 win in Baku.

2019-20 Season

Christensen was part of a rotating group of centre-backs under Lampard. He started several key matches but also suffered from injuries and inconsistent form. While he showed flashes of his quality, he struggled to hold down a regular starting spot as the club experimented with various defensive pairings.

2020-21 Season

Christensen’s role grew significantly after Tuchel’s arrival in January. He stepped up admirably during Thiago Silva’s injury in the Champions League final and played the final 66 minutes against Manchester City, helping secure a 1–0 win. Christensen’s performances in the knockout rounds earned praise for their maturity and tactical awareness. It was a career-defining season, as he became a Champions League winner.

2021-22 Season

In his final season at Chelsea, Christensen remained a key part of Tuchel’s defensive rotation. He scored his first senior goal for the club in a 4–0 win over Malmö in the Champions League. He helped Chelsea win the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, completing a clean sweep of major trophies with the Blues. His contract situation was a point of media speculation throughout the year, and he left the club on a free transfer in June 2022, joining FC Barcelona.

International

Andreas Christensen made his senior debut for Denmark on 8 June 2015, coming on as a substitute in a 2–1 win over Montenegro. He earned his first start in March 2016 against Iceland. He played six games in Denmark’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers, scoring his first international goal in a 5–1 play-off win over Ireland. At the World Cup in Russia, he played both in central defence and midfield, but an error in the round of 16 against Croatia led to an equalizer in a match Denmark eventually lost on penalties.

At UEFA Euro 2020, Christensen was a key player, appearing in all six matches. He scored a memorable long-range goal in a 4–1 win over Russia, helping Denmark reach the semi-finals, where they lost 2–1 in extra time to England.
