Pre-Chelsea career
Charlie joined Chelsea since at the Under-11 age group, when he arrived from Charlton Athletic.
Chelsea career
Charlie made his Under-18 debut as an Under-15 at the back end of the 2011-12 season. Working with the academy on a full-time basis a year early as an Under-16 in 2012-13, he made further strides and appearances including scoring goals home and away against Manchester City. Later in the same campaign he earned considerable praise for his displays in key stages of the NextGen Series and FA Youth Cup despite being amongst the youngest players in the squad.
A pre-season injury prevented him from any real involvement in the first half of the 2013-14 campaign, making just four starts and seven appearances in total before Christmas. He came on strong thereafter though and proved a talismanic figure in the road to FA Youth Cup glory, scoring in both Semi Final victories over Arsenal before providing two decisive assists in the last ten minutes of the Final against Fulham.
An Under-21 regular in 2014-15, he was also named as captain for the victorious 2014-15 FA Youth Cup campaign whilst also turning in several magnificent performances during the Under-19s' run to the 2014-15 UEFA Youth League trophy. Growing in stature both physically and tactically throughout the year, he finished on a high when he joined the first team for a post-season tour of Thailand and Australia.
He took on something of a leadership role in 2015-16 as one of the Under-21 team's more senior players, and he served as the captain for the ultimately successful 2015-16 UEFA Youth League campaign, scoring in the Semi Final against Anderlecht. Contract issues ran season-long in the background but he penned a three-year extension in April before being named in a first team matchday squad for the first time away to Swansea, being handed the number 41 shirt.
A loan to Bristol Rovers with Jake Clarke-Salter kicked off the 2016-17 season but, despite starting well at the club, he found himself out of the team approaching Chrismas. Chelsea took the decision to recall him and send him to Swindon Town for the second half of the campaign along with Fankaty Dabo and Islam Feruz where, although he played well, he wasn't able to help the club avoid relegation to League Two.
He joined Vitesse Arnhem in 2017-18 along with Mason Mount, Matt Miazga and Fankaty Dabo, earning Europa League playing time before an injury ended his season at the midway stage. Injuries ended his season prematurely and, despite a subsequent loan to Shrewsbury in the first half of 2018-19, he remained a frustrated figure. In January 2019 he signed a permanent three and a half year deal with Swedish club Ostersunds.
International
Charlie has been capped by England at every age level up to Under-20.
