Pre-Chelsea career
James joined Chelsea as a highly-rated schoolboy, coming from the same Isleworth school as Michael Mancienne.
Chelsea career
Initially breaking into the Under-18 team as a 15 year-old, James was well regarded as a talented winger and accelerated through youth team football into the reserve setup at a very young age. Unfortunately, he never quite kicked on and, after a loan spell at Cardiff City came to nothing, he was released on a free transfer.
International
James, who could also have represented England, chose to play for the Republic of Ireland at Under-19 level.
