Pre-Chelsea career

Mitchell joined Chelsea's academy in 2007 from Gillingham's Centre of Excellence. His father, Mark Beeney, has been serving as the club's youth and reserve goalkeeping coach since 2001.

Chelsea career

Mitchell made his Under-18 debut at the back end of the 2010-11 season and was a regular feature for Adrian Viveash's team in 2011-12, sharing goalkeeping duties with Jamal Blackman before becoming first choice in 2012-13.

He featured considerably in runs to both the FA Youth Cup and NextGen Series Finals, whilst also making his first appearances at Under-21 level, debuting in that age group away to Wolves in October 2012. With Jamal Blackman more involved at first-team level in 2013-14, he received more Under-21 action alongside his youth team duties, and earned his own first involvement in José Mourinho's first team parties as third choice goalkeeper. He finished the season by winning both the FA Youth Cup and Under-21 Premier League titles and played a key role in both triumphs over the course of the campaign.

Blackman went out on loan early in 2014-15, allowing Mitchell to establish himself as the first choice Under-21 goalkeeper. He did so with a series of impressive performances and earned himself duty as backup goalkeeper for the first team late in the season with the title clinched. Injuries and competition from Blackman and Brad Collins led to fewer Under-21 appearances in 2015-16 but he did go out on loan for the first time, taking in a short spell at League Two side Newport County.

He joined Crawley Town on loan for 2016-17, joining up with former manager Dermot Drummy, but only made four appearances there before returning early and only surfacing again for the Development Squad towards the end of the campaign. 2017-18 saw him spend the first half of the campain at Chelsea before joining Sligo Rovers in January, a move he would make permanent at the end of the season.

International

Mitchell has been capped by England at Under-19 and Under-20 levels.
