Pre-Chelsea career
Todd joined Chelsea at Under-8 level and is a lifelong Blues fan.
Chelsea career
A regular at right-back throughout the youth ranks, Todd made his Under-18 debut in the 2009-10 season, as Dermot Drummy followed the annual tradition of introducing soon-to-be first-year scholars into the ranks whilst still at school. His energetic and enthusiastic approach proved both popular and impactful, and he produced back-to-back assists early in his youth team career, including a superb 90-yard run in the match against Cardiff City.
Playing as a midfielder or a wide forward for much of his first season as a scholar, Todd led Chelsea's Under-18 team in goals, and scored his first goal for the Reserve team in March 2011 away to Bolton, playing as a right-back.
In May 2011 Todd scored a spectacular equaliser in the 2010-11 national Premier Reserve League Final, which Chelsea ended up winning on penalty kicks. His ascension into Dermot Drummy's reserve team ranks was made full time ahead of the 2011-12 season.
Despite playing a near-full schedule at Reserve level, Todd also saw plenty of youth team action en route to winning the 2011-12 FA Youth Cup, a competition in which he was ever present. To cap a successful season, he travelled as part of the Champions League Final squad and was involved in the celebrations after beating Bayern Munich.
He was named the Under-21 team captain for the 2012-13 season and featured heavily early on, before joining Preston North End on a six-week loan around Christmas. He didn't quite get going at Deepdale, but was soon on the move again early in 2013, moving up one division to join troubled Blackburn Rovers. There, he impressed under a number of managers and earned a second, longer stay until the end of the season, by which time he'd established himself as a very capable player.
On June 25th 2013 it was announced that Todd would return to Blackburn for the entire 2013-14 season, where he continued as a regular in the team up until Christmas before injuries and a loss of form resulted in him playing a reduced role.
Injuries prevented him from going on loan from the start of the 2014-15 season before he eventually joined Bristol City in November. Impressing in a defensive midfield role at Ashton Gate, he moved on to Nottingham Forest in January 2015 in a move funded by a SkyBet competition winner. He struggled to hold down a regular spot there though, making just eight appearances, but would experience a much more favourable 2015-16 season in the Eredivisie on loan with newly-promoted NEC Nijmegen. There, he was an ever-present in the league at right-back and served as the team's vice-captain until late April, when a torn anterior cruciate ligament brought a premature end to a fantastic campaign in which he attracted the attentions of some of Europe's bigger clubs.
He was only able to return in February of 2017 having spent eight months on the sidelines, and managed three appearances for the Development squad as other injuries kept him sidelined for the latter portions of the 2016-17 campaign. A return to fitness saw a return to the Eredivisie with Groningen in 2017-18, where he linked up again with manager Ernst Faber, but even more time on the treatment table saw the deal cut short in January after just ten appearances. He spent the rest of the season at Oxford United, scoring three goals in 17 games.
2018-19 saw a loan move to Hull City, back in the Championship, and would mark the end of his Chelsea career at the end of the season after an eighteen-year association with the club.
International
Todd was called up and capped by England at Under-19 level in October and November of 2011, having previously been overlooked at every age level. He scored his first international goal against Slovenia in May 2012. He received his first Under-21 call-up early in the 2013-14 season but was not capped.
