The 1971 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was contested between Chelsea and six-time European Cup winners Real Madrid at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens. It was Chelsea's first appearance in a European final, in their first season in the European Cup Winners' Cup, though they had previously reached the semi-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Having knocked out the holders, Manchester City, in the semi-finals, the Blues took on a talented Real Madrid side consisting mainly of Spanish internationals.

The Spanish side had the best of the game before Peter Osgood put the Blues ahead after 55 minutes, with the Spaniards pressing for an equaliser for the remainder of the match. Chelsea's resistance was broken in the last minute when Zoco equalised, and the match finished in a 1-1 draw; the sides required to take part in a replay replay of the final 48 hours later.
